Toby Larsson Hogman

Toby brings almost 20 years of international patent experience to Chapman Tripp Patents. Toby advises a wide range of clients on protecting their inventions and navigating infringement risk.

Toby has a master’s degree in engineering physics, and specialises in the fields of medical devices, electromechanical devices, and software. Before qualifying as a patent attorney, Toby was an inventor himself developing an innovative optical blood analysis device for a leading biomedical testing company.

He has extensive experience in advising on patentability, freedom-to-operate, invalidity and infringement matters within the engineering space in multiple countries. In doing so, he has developed a niche expertise in performing time and cost-efficient searches that lead to high quality advice. 

He also has extensive experience in assisting clients on IP strategies and IP related investor discussions.

Prior to moving to New Zealand in 2017, he worked as a European Patent Attorney and Swedish Patent Attorney. During this period, he was involved in multiple EP patent oppositions.

Throughout his career he has worked with several technologies, including:

• Medical devices (including respiratory support and therapy devices, imaging such as MRI/CT systems, wearable exoskeleton devices, gynaecology devices, brain cooling devices)
• Biometrics
• Software/AI based control systems
• Telecom (infrastructure and handsets)
• Traffic safety systems (including inflatable helmets, and onboard vehicle remote object detection systems)
• Aviation (as a pilot he has a keen interest in all aviation type inventions and has advised several clients in the aviation space in both Europe and in New Zealand)
• Ventilation systems
• Air filters
• Agricultural technology (Agtech) including wearable monitoring devices for animals
• Dairy, meat, and beverage processing plants and packaging systems
• Furniture and building technology
