David has a broad range of litigation experience in both public and private law matters, with a particular focus on statutory and contractual interpretation.

He has experience advising and assisting clients across a broad spectrum of industries, including transport, telecommunications, energy, and construction on both contentious and non-contentious matters.

Before joining Chapman Tripp, David spent two years as a Judges' Clerk at the Court of Appeal.

Recent highlights

  • Acting in High Court litigation successfully defending a set aside application in a major international arbitration dispute, the first of its kind in New Zealand.
  • Acting in High Court litigation successfully defending Transpower in a judicial review proceeding concerning an alleged breach of the Electricity Industry Participation Code.
  • Assisting Victoria University of Wellington in reaching a $101m insurance settlement relating to the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake.
  • Advising and acting for Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency on a variety of regulatory and governance matters.
  • Advising Chorus on a range of contractual and public law matters.
