With expertise in a broad range of disputes and regulatory investigations, Sam has a particular focus on banking and finance, insolvency and construction matters.

Sam also represents clients in connection with regulatory investigations and proceedings by the Commerce Commission, Securities Commission, Financial Markets Authority and Serious Fraud Office.

Sam recently returned from the UK where he worked in the banking litigation team at Dentons, and completed a secondment to Barclays Bank where he managed the litigation portfolio of the bank’s private client division.

He has appeared as counsel in proceedings in the District Court and High Court, and has represented clients in various alternative dispute resolution forums.

Recent highlights

  • Represented leading banks and financial service providers, most recently assisting a Cayman bank to preserve and recover US$8m following a fraud at a New Zealand financial services provider.
  • Counselled receivers, administrators and liquidators, most recently appearing for the receivers of Capital + Merchant Finance in successful High Court proceedings to determine entitlement to a fund.
  • Assisted a large New Zealand company in a dispute with the receivers of a collapsed construction company concerning the relative priorities of security interests.
  • Acted for a government agency in a $50m construction dispute over the progress of a key infrastructure project.
  • Acted for Barclays Bank and The Royal Bank of Scotland in a significant portfolio of claims brought by customers in relation to the alleged misselling of various financial products, including interest rate and foreign exchange derivatives, and LIBOR manipulation.
  • Assisted Barclays Bank in regulatory investigations initiated by the Financial Markets Authority.
