Grace specialises in working with clients on complex legal issues and disputes.

She advises private and public sector clients on a broad range of matters with particular expertise in disputes and other areas of legal risk involving insurance, corporate governance, and contractual and statutory interpretation.

Grace's skills include managing complex multi-disciplinary matters and working closely with clients to provide advice that responds to their specific commercial, operational and policy context.

Recent highlights

  • Advised the Earthquake Commission (EQC) on various issues arising from the Canterbury earthquakes including:
    • acting for EQC on novel declaratory judgment proceedings in the nature of an anticipatory judicial review to obtain declarations to support its land settlement policies
    • working closely with EQC, and coordinating input from expert engineers and valuers, to develop methodologies to assess complex land damage for over 10,000 properties in Canterbury, and defending the resulting policies
    • advising EQC on its reinsurance cover
    • defending EQC in a range of disputes with customers and private insurers.
  • Advised New Zealand Steel relating to judicial reviews on international trade issues.
  • Assisted AMP with various issues to specific insurance claims, during a secondment.
  • Advised receivers of a large finance company on potential liability of the directors and auditors including resolving disputes through mediations.
  • Successfully defended claims by developers that certain properties were no longer required for public works, for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency.
