Advising on a wide range of commercial disputes and non-contentious work, Jared has expertise in litigation and advisory matters involving private, public, and international law.

Jared has appeared at all levels of the New Zealand court system, including as sole or senior counsel in the District Court, High Court and Human Rights Review Tribunal.  He has significant experience advising clients across a wide range of industries and contexts, including telecommunications, construction, transport, human rights, tort law, climate change and competition and regulation.

Jared has a particular abiding interest in public and private international law.  He has published in the New Zealand Yearbook of International Law.

Recent highlights

  • Acted for James Hardie on the successful resolution of three large proceedings brought against it (including two class actions) – two by settlement and one by judgment.
  • Successfully acted on the first recognition proceedings of an international investment (ICSID) award before the New Zealand courts.
  • Acted on multiple complex ongoing proceedings relating to climate change issues.
  • Provided advice on ESG and international human rights law risks.
  • Advised and acted for Chorus in relation to telecommunications regulation and the implementation of the new regulatory framework for fibre services, including as junior counsel in the successful judicial review of fibre services regulations.
  • Advised and acted for NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi on a range of matters, including leading the defence of its regulatory decisions in District Court appeal and High Court judicial review proceedings.
