Romy Wales is a litigator, with a particular focus on public and regulatory law. 

Romy advises across various public, regulatory and commercial contexts. She has experience advising government and private clients in a number of industries including transport, energy, construction and fisheries, and has acted in multiple proceedings relating to customary marine title. 

Romy has appeared in the Supreme Court, High Court, District Court and the Electricity Rulings Panel.

Prior to joining Chapman Tripp, Romy was a Judges’ Clerk at the Auckland High Court.

Recent highlights

  • Advised interested parties to applications brought under the Marine and Coastal Area (Takutai Moana) Act, including appearing in the Supreme Court in the first appeal under the Act to reach that court.
  • Advised Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency in judicial review proceedings brought in relation to its National Land Transport Programme.
  • Advised and acted for clients in appeals brought against the Commerce Commission's Input Methodologies and Default Price-quality Path Decisions.
  • Assisted and acted for Transpower in proceedings brought under the Electricity Industry Participation Code.
  • Advised and acted for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency on a range of matters, including appearing in the District Court in defence of its regulatory decisions.
